One thing that will greatly assist me in diagnosing this symptom is to confirm that, prior to logging via gdm, the desired mixer levels are muted or zeroed.
Please reboot, and switch to a text console instead of logging in via a graphical greeter. Login via getty, and use amixer or alsamixer to verify the mixer settings.
