I wanted to test Karmic from the flash drive when I had extra time

After I installed it, grub 2 overwritten my grub 1, so I could not boot
without the flash drive attached.

Read up some stuff on-line (can't fully retrace it, sorry)

Found a route to install grub 1 on to the usb. Booted in to Karmic, went
to synaptic and tried installing grub.

After that got the error.

Subsequently needed to boot, so went through grub restore on Jaunty.
Succeed. Then edited menu.lst with entries for karmic. No problems since
than.

Attaching the log as requested.
