Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: drupal6

Ubuntu 9.04
Drupal 6.10-1
I'm a beginner at all of this and was asked to file a bug report see:
http://drupal.org/node/439204

Installing Drupal6 through the synaptic results in questions on
autoconfiguration of databases. If selected this doesn't work.
In the end you end up with a mysql/phpmyadmin installation that doesn't have
the standard root and "blank" username and password.

After reinstalling mysql server and client separately localhost/install.php
returns a parser error.
Downloading the drupal package from the drupal.org site and extracting this in
/usr/share/drupal6/ makes everything work.

I suspect the .htaccess files are missing or incorrect because tinkering
with it made the parser error change in another error, but then again:
"I know nothing, I am from Barcelona".

Hope this was helpful in any way

** Affects: drupal6 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
