I guess it was due to missing codecs. anyways, after installing them according to http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Codecs I can now play DVDs. just want to mention that am playing DVDs I officially bought or borought from a librarary and that was not possible prior to installing those packages listed in that wiki artikel.
