After upgrade to karmic I've the same issue. Then I open alsamixer in a console and I found that it show 2 bars labeled "Speaker" in the Playback tab. The second one was muted and after unmute the speaker now I got sound when the headphones are connected.
There is no option in the Sound Preferences panel to do that.
