I have a similar problem.
I'm running Ubuntu Karmic on a laptop (Acer Extensa 5220) with X3100 Intel
graphic card.
Booting whit kernel 2.6.31-14 (default for karmic) I have a complete sistem
freeze after about 3 second after login.
I tried the option "vesa" on xorg, but i have a black screen on boot: first i
see the logo of Ubuntu (without progress barr), then instead of the logo with
the progress barr, i have a black screen. I can switch to consolle with Alt+F6,
I can see the write "login", but I can't enter any word.
Booting with the old kernel of Jaunty, the 2.6.28, and with "intel" in xorg,
the sistem will not freeze any more, but is very very slow, but the mouse
pointer doesn't work.
Booting with the old kernel of Jaunty, the 2.6.28, and with "vesa" in xorg, the
sistem will not freeze any more, ant it is fast, but the mouse pointer doesn't
work.

So, my laptop is unusable.

Ask me for more informations, if are needed.

P.S. Some one can help me? I'm confused: it's a intel, xorg o kernel
problem?
