For example, http://bassdrive.com/v2/streams/BassDrive.pls The playlist contains about 20 network sources. CDN emulation. When I open it by "Open location...", Totem go to coma for a 5 seconds. I'm download file, because I was think that a downloading problem. But when I open it from local folder, Totem sleeps for a 5-10 seconds, too. I'm suggest, Totem starts check every remote file. I have a 11 Mb/s connection and problem maybe only in not accessible sources.
