I guess this has to do something with HAL (is it completely replaced in
karmic already?). After adding the printer manually again it works. So
the driver itself has no problem but the auto-configuration.

/etc/cups/printers.conf:
[NEW configuration:]
  <Printer Brother_DCP-120C>
  [...]
  DeviceURI usb://Brother/DCP-120C
  [...]
  </Printer>
[OLD configuration:]
  <DefaultPrinter DCP-120C>
  [...]
