I _think_ that the problem was that the LDAP server certificate was just a regular SSL certificate and it needed recreating as a "server" certificate (build-key-server from easy-rsa tools): nsCertType = server extendedKeyUsage=serverAuth keyUsage = digitalSignature, keyEncipherment
