Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

Whenever I attempt to play a video using vlc, I get no video output and
the error message "VLC does not support the audio or video format
"[whatever format the video is]". Unfortunately there is no way for you
to fix this." This happens regardless of what the format is. Audio still
plays just fine, though. I have had this problem XVIDwith .mpg, .avi
(with a variety of codecs, including xvid and divx), and .wmv.
