Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/460830 is this bug but
it affect both the grub because the recovery option has to be chosen to see the
error even though the actual bug may be with mountall
and https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/mountall/+bug/458060
says that this was fixed
now
boot normal brings maintenance prompt that does not allow login with user
password for only account on machine
and if you use the arrow keys to select something else it garbles a message
printed on top of recovery options menu with mountall printed and similar login
that does not work at all(keyed entry doesn't show on screen)
