Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

2 related problems with the Karmic Koala live CD
(ubuntu-9.10-rc-desktop-i386.iso):
(1) the live CD asks for a password
(2) the live CD's gnome session does not work

When I boot the Karmic Koala live CD, the gnome display manager (GDM)
asks me for a user name and password. I can log in as "ubuntu" and a
blank password. However, when I log in with the gnome session, it
crashes and goes back to GDM. The xterm session works.

Salient lines from syslog:
Oct 28 20:25:46 ubuntu gdm-binary[1978]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no
seat-id found
Oct 28 20:30:32 ubuntu gdm-session-worker[3208]: pam_sm_authenticate: Called
Oct 28 20:30:32 ubuntu gdm-session-worker[3208]: pam_sm_authenticate: username
= [ubuntu]
Oct 28 20:30:55 ubuntu gdm-session-worker[3532]: pam_sm_authenticate: Called
Oct 28 20:30:55 ubuntu gdm-session-worker[3532]: pam_sm_authenticate: username
= [ubuntu]

The .xsession-errors.old file (relevant for my gnome-session attempt) contains
several complaints about being unable to connect to :0.0. For example:
gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server
:0.0.

** Affects: casper (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
