I just upgraded my karmic system to all the latest packages (including PulseAudio and the stock Wine package) and my sound on WoW now works fine using the ALSA wine output plugin. I no longer need Neil Wilson's wine-pulse PPA.
At least, this is true after about 10 minutes of play.
