Maybe you missed the part where I said I don't have anything pulseaudio installed. Kubuntu does not ship with pulseaudio and I have not done anything to change that. I have taking time to go through a list of my installed packages to be extra sure that pulseaudio is not installed. Phonon is using xine as backend just the way kubuntu is configured out of the box.
