Meanwhile the final Karmic is out, so I booted that. It does not boot unless the "quiet" and "splash" boot parameters are removed, and "noapic" and "safe graphics mode" are chosen. Then it boots fully and the desktop looks perfect. Without noapic it stall at "Clocksource tsc unstable..."
