This bug also prevented my machine from booting when I upgraded to Karmic. As a workaround, I added 'GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true' to my boot parameters, and changed 'root=UUID=foo' to 'root=/dev/sda1'. This allowed me to boot my machine.
