I have tested this with a fresh install of the release version of Ubuntu 9.10 desktop 64bit. The clicking / popping still exists.
I can confirm that editing the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and changing the following line fixes the problem:- options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N to options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N I have marked bug #442463 as a duplicate of this because this bug was reported earlier. However the other bug was triaged as Medium, so please can someone with the appropriate permission now mark this bug as Medium?
