I have the same problem with Ubuntu Karmic on my Samsung R610. Brightness adjustment doesn't work when proprietary Nvidia driver (185) is installed, because it seems it doesn't recognize the brightness applet.
I deactivated the proprietary driver, so that I've got the default free driver, and I can adjust brightness by clicking on the applet; using the Fn keys doesn't produce any effect. I hope this problem will soon be solved, because it's very annoying!
