I should have clarified: this problem occurs since I updated to Karmic
(fresh install is not an option at the moment, timewise).

I have in the meantime confirmed that pulseadio is the culprit that
prevents the system from going into suspend mode: When I kill
pulseaudio, the notebook then enters suspend no problem - both through
closing the lid and through the menu.
