I fixed it by doing the following: $ sudo rm /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-hinting-slight.conf $ sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-hinting-medium.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/ $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig
