same problem, but in my case it doesn't work with external playback either. I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 and it works with 9.04. I have tried to downgrade the gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg plugin to version 0.10.6.2, but still nothing. Really annoying, cause you encounter many videos in this format on the web.
