I think I have the same problem...
To reproduce it...
Login to a fresh karmic install (i have an nvidia gpu so dekstop effects are
off by default)
Notice the beautiful fade effect when xsplash disappears and then get to the
fully working desktop
Then enable desktop effects (install the proprietary nvidia drivers)
Log out
Log back in
Notice that xsplash flickers when compz starts the mouse appears the "progress
bar" (I don't know how to call it) freezes for some time and then xsplash
simply disappears (without fade effect) and you got a half loaded desktop...
(it completes loading in some seconds)
