Ok, the same problem like piratemurray I have to.
When I put in terminal sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload I get this:

I have linux kernel 2.6.28-16-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 20 19:48:24 UTC 
2009 i686 GNU/Linux.
After upgrade the sound didn't worked at all on this kernel.
