Okay, I think there is something I've missed since the beginning with
this bug. I just did a full reinstall of Karmic (switching from fakeraid
to lvm) and when I first booted on 2.6.31-14-generic... wireless network
didn't work, with the exact same symptoms as those I've described here:
"requesting firmware" message, visible networks but with always full
signal strength bars, etc.

The problem was solved by installing linux-backports-modules-karmic
(which depends on linux-backports-modules-2.6.31-14-generic). I recall
having installed this package on my previous setup (don't remember the
reason, though).

I also reinstalled linux-rt, and the problem is still present, which is
not much of a surprise. And there's no linux-backports-modules package
for -rt.

Now, I don't know how to act. Should we call this bug "no backported
modules for linux-rt", or "<my ralink usb wireless card> does not work
without backported modules" ?
