Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

Hello,

I have a Ricoh Aficio CL2000. That model doesn't come by default with a
network interface or a duplex unit, but I have both options installed.
It is a PostScript 3 enabled printer and I purchased that one because I
wanted Operating System independence.

In both Ubuntu 9.04 and Ubuntu 9.10 the printer will not print. When a job is
sent, the printer warms up... waits a while and then shuts down itself again.
It did work on previous iterations of Ubuntu, but I do not remember if it was
8.04 or 8.10 last. I can reinstall those if needed for testing purposes.
However, what I know for certain is:
- it works in Windows XP SP2 and SP3 with the Ricoh provided Postscript drivers
- it works with Debian Lenny (up to date) without a problem. (No GNome
desktop, but direct installation by http://localhost:631)
- it worked on OS X 1.3 when I still had an Apple computer (long time ago)

What this tells to me that it is definitely not a hardware problem.

What I both did on 9.04 and 9.10 was the following:

- Used the GNome "Printer Configuration - localhost", and configure the already
found printer on 192.168.0.203 (which is the DHCP "fixed" IP address provided
by my OpenBSD server) and followed the instructions. Didn'r work.
- Next I tried JetDirect manually... At a point it asked me to provide the PPD
file.
- Tried all three PPD options. Provided by Ubuntu, provided by the included
Download wizard and provided my own by using those at openprinting.org and
extracting the PPD from the windows drivers.
- I did the above with both IPP and LPD/LPR (queue is "lp" according to the
service manual).... Didn't work either.
- All of the above again *without* specifying the Duplex unit.... (Thought it
could perhaps have an influence, it didn't)
- I also tried all of the above by using the web interface of cups
(http://localhost:631)... It makes no difference.

Since I am a Linux System Administrator at my day job, I did the
following:

cat /usr/share/system-config-printer/testpage-a4.ps | nc
wobbegong.sharks 9100

(wobbegong.sharks resolves to 192.168.0.203, using my own DNS on the
OpenBSD server mentioned above)

This prints the test page just fine.

I'm at loss... I have no idea how to fix this. I have the same problem
both on 9.10 (my personal desktop) and 9.04 (my work laptop). My work
laptop prints just fine on a PostScript enabled Xerox 8560MFP at work.

As said, I'm a sysadmin... I can run "hard" tests.... I just want to be
able to print again....

Greetings

Jorg
