Hi, I replaced GNM by wicd (don't forget to set up wlan0 as your wireless connection, it didn't detect it) and there is no drop anymore. (At least after half an hour test. But that's long compared to what it used to be with GNM.)
So it seems that once you have 9.10 + backported modules, it is only a strange interaction between the slow scan of all ath9K frequencies and a "feature" of GNM.
