I have tried Rich's solution of killing gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor and this does enable f-spot to launch the importer correctly but it then fails to transfer any files from the phone. I can't cut and paste the error message f-spot displays so if anyone knows where to look for it in a log file ....
