I found a solution: run alsamixer in terminal, then set the 'digital' switch to analog (the 'front mic jack mode' switch doesn't do anything, as one might think). Anyway, I can't find this option/setting in the gnome-volume-control app.
another thing: if I run gnome-alsamixer, I can see a 'digital input source' switch, which doesn't do anything and the terminal gives: ** (gnome-alsamixer:4925): WARNING **: gam_toggle_get_state ().
