This is very stupid and I should have tried it before contributing to
this bug. I have been using a Belkin wireless adapter on Intrepid and
Jaunty with no issues so when I upgraded to Karmic and internet was slow
I didn't think it could be problem with the adapter support. Well, I'm
still not sure whether that is the problem or not but, having seen that
disabling IPv6 in Firefox didn't do any good, I decided to give it a try
and change to a wired connection and every thing is back to normal now,
fast internet access across the whole system.

Maybe it's worth a try for all of you who had this problem using
wireless.
