Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash

Using 9.10 Karmic Final.

usplash 0.5.49, startupmanager 1.9.12-1ubuntu1

Hello again. I've been having a problem with usplash. With certain
themes, when booting or shutting down, only text set at the bootloader's
resolution will be displayed. There is no splash screen whatsoever, even
is "quiet" is enabled. If the default splash screen is used (usplash-
theme-ubuntu), it works fine. usplash themes from the reops (debian-
theme, usplash-theme-ubuntu-color) also works fine. however, themes from
anywhere else (suck as GNOME look) have the above problem.

Looking at my boot text (and also shutdown text), I found this:

usplash main process (XXXX) terminated with status code 3

Nothing else looked out of the ordinary.

To make sure I am installing the splash screen correctly, this is what
I'm doing:

1. I go over to GNOME look and grab a theme (Afisufi High Tech, for
example: http://www.gnome-
look.org/content/show.php/Asufi+High+Tech+Usplash+Theme?content=98360)

2. I download the file. I extract the contents of afisufi-high-
tech-0.1-alpha-4.so.bz2, and end up with afisufi-high-
tech-0.1-alpha-4.so

3. I get Startup Manager and go to Appearance --> Manage usplash
themes... I hit add. I then navigate to where afisufi-high-
tech-0.1-alpha-4.so is and open it.

4. I select afisufi-high-tech- 0.1-alpha-4. I close Startup Manager. It
runs the post-config scripts and closes.

5. I confirm that the file ended up where it supposed to be by looking
in /usr/lib/usplash. It is there.

I confirmed that the resolution and color depth and things were correct.
It is 1280x1024 at 24 bits (17" LCD monitor)

Some notes: I uninstalled GRUB2 and installed Grub Legacy, simply
because I think the whole not being able to directly edit this new
grub.cfg, and having to tinker with the files in /etc/grub.d and
/etc/default/grub is a little confounding, and needs some time to get
some polish. (like the whole pulseaudio thing, which drove me up the
wall for months in Jaunty, now seems to have gotten darn stable and
causing no problems at this point)

This also happened to me in 9.04 Jaunty.

The usplash guidelines are to be attached along with the apport stuff.
Also, just for kicks, an extended dmesg.
