Mike, can you please post the output of "lspci -v" as an attachment to this bug-report. Or tell me what GPU and driver you are using? Your described problem looks very much like a driver-bug with the ati-video- driver for Xorg. Should that be the case you'll be able to work around that, but using the newer acceleration-method EXA, instead of XAA.
