I have "manually" updated my system today using aptitude. After this update, the dialog "A new version of Kubuntu has been found" no longer appears. The effect is that I can no longer reproduce this bug. However, I am not certain whether a) the bug has really been fixed or b) the bug is simply masked because the updated has been installed manually.
However, do note that even before today (that is, two weeks ago) I already updated manually using aptitude, but the bug was still there.
