Glad to meet a fellow EeePC user!  I very much enjoy mine!

Luckily, the solution for you should be very simple.  Due to a bug in
one of the update packages, your Ubuntu installation was left to boot
into an older kernel, but all of the other components were updated.
This caused compatibility mismatches between parts.  While your upgrade
process was slightly different from most others (coming from Easy
Peasy), the same fix should work.

Start up the program called "Terminal", and type in the command: sudo 
upgrade-grub
It may ask you for your password as well.

After that, reboot the machine.  After logging in, double-check the mute
status of the devices in the audio mixer, as some of them may become
muted in the process.  Then, report back to us if you got sound or not.

By the way, don't worry too much about the iBus input system, unless you
intend to be using non-Latin based alphabets (like Russian or Japanese).
