Someone found a solution to the default PulseAudio settings in Karmic
9.10 quite easy:

I tested it and it solves the 9.10 default audio card assignation to
PulseAudio.  Once the System/Preference/Multimedia system selector
appears the microphone issue is solced on my system by selecting the
input hardware device that points to "alsa_input.pci"
