@Daniel Thanks for the help. After reading that article, I gather that my problem is caused by my USB soundcard not reporting the volume levels in dB properly. Although I did a fair bit of research on Google, I'm unable to find a solution to fix my problem.
In any case, my case seems to be unrelated to the problem being discussed here.
