I'll take a look at /etc/network/interfaces tomorrow. The problem occurs immediately after a fresh boot of CD Live so I wouldn't expect there to be anything but I'll check.
If you look in the /var/log/syslog above you'll see that the network manager actually disables the network connection during boot. I don't know why. When I get the chance I'll try my laptop wireless to see if it has a similar network connection problem. The wireless driver operates thru ndiswrapper.
