For me the bug is perhaps not with Stellarium but something in Ubuntu 9.10.Most of the time when Ubuntu 9.10 starts up I see a black screen instead of the desktop background.If I then try and run Stellarium I get this bug.When Ubuntu starts and the desktop background is visible then Stellarium works fine.Celestia behaves in the same way.
