I can confirm that installing the backports significantly increases the speed and reliability of the wireless card on my eeepc 1005ha, with Karmic 9.10 Netbook Remix (UNR).
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic I installed the above package, restarted the netbook and saw an increase from 35% signal strength to 65%.
