I'm not certain we even have an auto-switch feature between internal and external microphone jacks. But it should be switchable in the gnome- volume-control, which it isn't in your case. What might help you to solve the problem is to install the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic- generic package (available in Synaptic). After that, reboot your system and see if it works.
