Thanks. I have, since upgrading to Karmic, overwritten the en_ZA affix file with the en_GB copy. To me, both solutions are cludgy. What should happen is that an update should be issued which does this (and anything else that needs to be done at the same time) for the user.
This is to give the user peace of mind that the problem has been fixed correctly.
