Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdm

* Tried to reboot my main workstation today (due to problems of unknown
origin.)

* System displayed various messages in a jumble on the text console. It
took a while to figure out that there was a prompt hiding under the
text. KDE did not boot.

* running service KDM restart produced a cryptic diagnostic - I suspect
it was trying to say that it was not able to talk to X.

(That's the bug I am reporting - the message is not helpful.)

* eventually I tried xinit and got a more meaningful message: a file
name such as /tmp/.X0-(something) with a note saying that the file was
pointing to a process that was not responding. The error message also
suggested removing the file if the process was really gone.

* as the system had just rebooted I went ahead and removed the file.
Service kdm restart then brought-up KDE as desired.

I would appreciate it if the KDM process would detect and report the
error more clearly. This would make it easier for me to resolve the
problem when it happens.

However, if my mom was running Kubuntu I'd be forced to take half a day
off from work over a bug like this. Once the error message is fixed it
would also be a good idea to look into adding code to remove references
to non-existent processes.

Thanks again guys - great work!
