The problem is still present in Karmic.
Enabling pulse output in /etc/mpd.conf:
audio_output {
type "pulse"
name "My Pulse Output"
}
And tunning PulseAudio preferences with paprefs as said in #15 ("enable
network access to local sound devices" and "don't require
authentication") fixes it.
MPD is still not ready out-of-the-box for Ubuntu.
