I found this annoying, too, so I investigated: Removing the checkmark at "Settings -> Enhanced -> Update -> Automatically check for updates on -> Search Engines" should fix this. I just found this out, so it isn't tested jet. Would be nice if this would be disabled by default on Ubuntu.
