Well I spoke too soon and I did have the same problem with 8.04 LTS
(i.e. a freeze, but mouse moving), but actually I now think that all my
problems with the HP Pavilion laptop have been related to the NVIDIA
graphics. I took apart the laptop as far as removing the system board,
and rebuilt it. Then I upgraded the BIOS. I've done a fresh install of
9.10. Its when I install the NVIDIA Hardware drivers, either 173 or 185
that the system stops working. If I don't install those drivers it seems
to work OK. Luckily I don't need high performance graphics, at the
moment. I don't think any of these problems are related to pulseaudio.
