i was having this very same issue with an intel ICH9 soundcard. i also tried openSUSE 11.2 and fedora 12 and the bug was there as well (at least in the Live CDs), so it doesn't seem to be Ubuntu specific. with Ubuntu 9.04 (LiveCD) everything seemed fine.
i found a partial workaround by following the suggestions from the following thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=806620 as suggested in the link above, i added the line options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file. with the above model, the hissing sound did disappear, but when i plugged in the headphone jack, i would get sound from *both* the speakers and headphones. i experimented with several other models. with some of them, i wouldn't have any sound at all; with others, i would get only hiss; i am now using the model 'targa-dig': with this model, when i plug the headphone jack in, i get no hiss and i get sound only through the headphones. however, one of my microphones no longer works. with the model 'acer-aspire', i get no hiss and both microphones work. however, i get no sound at all through the speakers. sadly, i wasn't able to find a model with which everything worked... ** Attachment added: "lspci" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/35716453/lspci.txt -- [9.10]Audio hiss coming from netbook speakers when using headphones https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/480929 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
