I have this problem on a Dell Latitude X300 using ubuntu 9.10 and kubuntu 9.10. In 9.04 it doesn't happen. My video card is 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device [8086:3582] (rev 02). I have tested the built'in kernel and 2.6.31.rc9 with the same result. When I close the lid and open again the screen remains blank appearing only the cursor without movement. I can't change the tty or force the reboot via REISUB combination. I only can press the power button to force it to shutdown.
I have modified the grub.cfg to include "nomodeset". This prevents the computer to hang, but the screen becomes corrupted when the lid is opened. You can fix it by changing from tty7 to other tty, and then returning to tty7.
