After some head scratching here I did an 'apt-get purge compiz' and
'apt-get install compiz'. I then tried to do a 'compiz --replace &' as
root and it gave me an error. So I ran it as a regular user 'jim' and
it seemed to install correctly. But when I checked /home/jim/.gconf/
desktop/gnome/session/required_components/%gconf.xml the window manager
was still listed as metacity. So I tried to change it using gconf-
editor the setting in the file did not change. So I ran (as root)
'dpkg-reconfigure gconf' and then the setting in the file was changed.

I don't know if any of this thrashing about has relevance... but... the
good news is that the weirdness in evolution was gone again once compiz
was loaded and running properly!

So I can confirm that changing the window manager does change the odd
behaviour of mouse focus in Evolution.

I am adding as an attachment
~/.gconf/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/%gconf.xml. This has (I
think) the complete list of compiz settings.
