Ok this bug might fall into two separate parts 1. A recent update set to zero and muted all channels, and the Sound Preferences of pulseaudio were unable to unmute them 2. Zeimusu didn't rtfm for alsamixer. :-(
To clarify. By using alsamixer correctly (The 'm' key to toggle muting, the arrow keys to change levels) I could regain sound. Part 2 is now fixed.
