To be more clearly.
When in grub menu:
press 'e' to edit.
move cursor to the end of the line with starts with "linux" 
type: vga=791
press ctrl+x to boot 

After the system boots and you log in to gdm and see your desktop, try
CTRL+ALT+1

If console will looks ok it would seem you have the same problem as I
