Neither sl-modem-daemon and timidity were installed. I installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic.
On first reboot I got the login tune but still no sound. Tried a second reboot, the driver was found and I managed to play some music. However, after about 5 minutes the driver was lost and I am back to Dummy Output.
